Can you write your lead in a tweet?

LSU Student Media Director Steve Buttry visits South Hall

LSU Student Media Director Steve Buttry explained to #manship2010 today that the best way to learn to write a great lead is to first say it in 140 characters. In other words, work to tweet your lead.

“If it’s more than 140 characters, it’s probably too long,” Buttry said.

Don’t be a burro. Know your AP Style.

Student Media Director Steve Buttry said today writing style guides help us to know the difference between burro (an ass) and burrow (to make a hole or tunnel).

That’s why we study Associated Press style. While style, punctuation, grammar and word use aren’t thrilling topics, you can’t be trusted with the big stuff if you don’t get the small stuff right. We want to use words correctly so that we can be accurate, fair, brief and clear. Why should anyone believe your facts if you can’t spell or you misuse simple words?

So, don’t be a burro. If you are, you’ll want to burrow your way out of your writing problems.
